Reflections on a move

The Coach’s Corner Newsletter #59

This is the week my husband and I are uprooting and moving to a new home, in a new state, hundreds of miles away from the roots we’ve nurtured for more than a decade.

When you make a significant change in life – such as moving – the anticipation, preparation, doubts, excitement consume a great deal of your thoughts and activities.

It seems as if my husband and I have been packing for weeks, but when you get the call that the move will take place tomorrow (!!!) it feels like all the preparations were not enough.

As the foreman walked through our home, noting the items we’d declared and the boxes we’d packed, I was intimidated when he expressed we may have underestimated the amount that they would be loading on the truck. I shared that there was no reason to be frustrated with us, we would all work together to get things done.

He turned around, “do I sound angry?”

“Yes,” I nodded, “and I’m sure the reality of everything being moved out of our home is hitting me very hard.”

So we started over.

Seven hours later, the rig pulled away. Our home, which was filled with all the elements that reflected what we love most: our family, our friends, our interests, our passions and our sense of beauty was sealed up in boxes and heading down the road.

The photo above, taken just days before the move, captures how our reflection with just the right amount of light, settles into a shadow. We were talking about what we will miss as we leave our lives in Colorado behind AND what we are looking forward to as we embark on a new adventure in Texas.

By the time we’d finished our conversation, we were no longer in shadow

Thoughts on bidding farewell and welcoming the new

  1. “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” – Albert Einstein

  2. “If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try.” – Seth Godin

  3. “All great changes are preceded by chaos.” – Deepak Chopra

  4. “If you do not change direction, you might end up where you are heading.” – Lao Tzu

  5. “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” – Michael Jordan

My takeaway

Thank you for the space to take a break and relocate. To everyone who’s letting me off the hook for these two weeks, I am so grateful.

I’ll be back next week – with insights from amazing clients, friends and strangers who offer me fresh ways to consider life, listen better and teach me that every single moment you have a choice.
